2018
A celebration and satirization of 80s and 90s Barbie commercials, Daughters of Northern Darkness premiered at CalArts as part of the 2018 Art MFA group show. It utilizes humor to cynically entertain the possibility of an extreme mainstreaming and commodification of the subgenre. It’s as much a love letter to Barbie as it is a critique of “True” Norwegian Black Metal’s insistence upon the preservation of purity, and misconception that any medium, movement, or technique is immune to contamination. In 2019 the video went viral, and has since garnered millions of views and worldwide acclaim (and criticism).
